Last night we slept warm... Only needed a sheet and sleeping bag over us. The warmest night yet. Jan has been going to bed with sox, sweatpants, an oversized men's long - sleeved shirt and a lightweight fleece, but kicked off the sox and sweats last night. We think it will be a lot colder at night up in the Cascades and in the desert next week so we may buy another sleeping bag.
Despite the warm night the day broke sunny, clear, chilly and with a stiff breeze. It feels like early October. The skies are blue as can be! We went north a few miles to the dunes (Floras State Rec Area). There's a lake and a creek there so we thought we could possibly kayak there, but even the dunes we weren't enough to cut the wind. It turns out the lake is very popular for parasailing. We watched several people for a while; it sure looked like fun! We saw a bald eagle fly overhead also which was very cool! The east side of the dunes have a wide variety of wildflowers that were quite beautiful if you took the time to look at them..
Since Floras didn't pan out for kayaking Paul suggested heading up along the Sixes River which had two boat launches marked on the map. The drive was pretty but the river wad gravelly. We could have done it if we had two cars so we could pick up at the other end. We also checked out Elk River and a small lake in Port Orford but neither one of those worked either.
So in the end we went back to our site, made some sandwiches and had a picnic at the cliff overlook, then played a game of Scrabble. The overlook is really well protected from the wind; it was sunny and warm.
Spaghetti cooked in the camper and we're good for the night.
The *Congestion * photo gives an idea of the rural nature of the place. This was on the way to Floras Lake.
