Cape Blanco Lighthouse is the western most lighthouse in the US. We have no cell service at Humbug and Paul needs to be on a conference call at 7 am in the morning. So we decided to go to back north a little bit to Cape Blanco and try to camp there tonight. It's first come first served, so we'll see what we can find. This too reminds us of boat trips. There's a fine dance between departing campers and arriving campers. It's all in the timing.
Cape Blanco is also an evacuation area for tsunamis. See sign below. So for the next two days we are very safe at 245' above sea level.
Upon arrival at Cape Blanco we had a hard time choosing a site. They were ALL wonderful! Even the worst site was better than Humbug. We had our choice of over 30 sites with full hookups. We found one with an ocean view, birds chirping, sun, and a short trail down to a private picnic table overlook over the ocean . From there we had some bread, cheese, and an Amity Pinot blanc. We watched sea lions on rocks off the coast with our binoculars. The ranger said whales are active out there now too. This place is stunning!
After such a nice morning we walked back to the camper and Jan took a nap. Then we took a walk toward the beach and found 3 other nice picnic - overlook spots. We drove down to the Sixes River, which borders the Cape, hoping to find a good kayaking spot, but the river is tidal here and subject to the strong breezes that are always blowing.
The reviews on TripAdvisor had highly recommended The Redfish restaurant in Port Orford so we went there for dinner. OH. MY. GOSH. We started with a table by the window with the most amazing view over the rocky bay north from Humbug Mountain. The sun was getting low and the colors were deep and rich with gentle ocean waves rolling in. For dinner, Jan had crab cakes and Paul had jambalaya... But the names don't describe how delicious the food was! We had a great white wine... Evolution #9, with it.
